Ryan S. Carey
Ryan S. Carey is a partner of the firm of Apruzzese, McDermott, Mastro & Murphy, P.C. and is admitted to the practice of law in New Jersey and New York and before the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. His practice is concentrated in the areas of employment law and related litigation and counseling. Representing management in both the private and public sectors, Mr. Carey has successfully handled complex employment-related disputes at the administrative, state court and federal court levels. Mr. Carey’s matters have involved novel and complex issues arising under the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination, the New Jersey Conscientious Employee Protection Act, the New Jersey Civil Rights Act, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and 1991, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the New Jersey Wage and Hour Law, as well as state contract and tort claims arising in the employment context. A large portion of Mr. Carey’s practice is also dedicated to client counseling to ensure compliance with all aspects of employment and labor law. In this capacity, Mr. Carey also prepares and reviews employer handbooks and policies, conducts workplace training and performs workplace investigations.
Mr. Carey has also successfully represented many municipalities in defense of litigation through Municipal Joint Insurance Funds. He has been appointed Special Counsel and Labor & Employment Counsel by a number of municipalities.
In the public sector, Mr. Carey has handled various personnel-related issues arising involving municipalities, including, but not limited to, grievances, disciplinary matters, disciplinary charges, investigations, discrimination and retaliation lawsuits, arbitrations, and other forms of litigation in state and federal courts. He has prosecuted many public sector disciplinary matters involving police officers, inclusive of charges seeking removal, and has successfully litigated the appeal of such matters.
Mr. Carey was selected to receive the 2025 Professional Lawyer of the Year Award from Somerset County and the New Jersey Commission on Professionalism in the Law. Per the Commission, such awards are presented to lawyers who are respected by colleagues for their character, competence and exemplary professional behavior. In 2025, Mr. Carey was also appointed to a 3-year term on the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Judicial and Prosecutorial Appointments Committee, which vets judicial and prosecutor candidates for the Governor’s Office. He was previously appointed by the New Jersey Supreme Court to the District XIII Ethics Committee and served as investigator for 6+ years (2017-2023).
Mr. Carey is a graduate of The College of New Jersey (B.S. cum laude) and Seton Hall University School of Law (J.D. cum laude). He is a member of the Labor and Employment Law Sections of the New Jersey, American and Somerset County Bar Associations (SCBA). He was a Trustee of the SCBA (2014-2024) and was elected Treasurer (2018-2020), Second Vice President (2020-2021), First Vice President (2021-2022), President-Elect (2022-2023) and President (2023-2024) of the Association. He has been appointed Co-Chair of the County Civil Practice Committee six times (2014-2021) and was appointed Co-Chair of the SCBA Employment/Labor Law Practice Committee several times (2013-2014, 2015-2016). He has also been appointed several times to the Somerset County Judicial and Prosecutorial Due Diligence Committee (2016-2025). Mr. Carey previously served as a Trustee of the Somerset County Bar Foundation (2011-2017), through which he worked on charitable initiatives. He was also a Master of the Bench of the Sidney Reitman Employment Law American Inn of Court.
Mr. Carey has authored several articles which have appeared in the New Jersey Labor and Employment Law Quarterly and other publications. He also speaks and presents on employment law topics and has appeared as an invited panelist at the New Jersey State Bar Association Annual Convention. He is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management.
Mr. Carey has also been recognized by New Jersey Super Lawyers and New Jersey Super Lawyers “Rising Stars” on multiple occasions in the category of Employment and Labor Law. *
